Africa on the Ball Speakers Night & Dinner – 7th February
Africa on the Ball are very pleased to announce we will be holding our first ever Speakers Night on the 7th of February at The Stirling Highland Hotel. The ticket price includes two great speakers and a three course meal (food detailed at the bottom).
Speaking at the event will be former player Jimmy Bone (who also managed Power Dynamos in Zambia) and motivational speaker Mike Stevenson of Thinktastic.
Former professional player and current SFA coach Jimmy Bone will share his experiences from coaching Zambian football league side Power Dynamos.
Jimmy has played for a number of teams around the world including Hong Kong Rangers, Toronto Blizzards and a little closer to home, Celtic. His most notable appearances were for Partick Thistle and St Mirren where he earned over 230 appearances between them. He later managed Arbroath, East Fife, St Mirren, Stenhousemiur and Airdrie but it is Jimmy’s tenure at Power Dynamos that will make him such an interesting character to hear from on the night.
During Jimmy’s time in charge of the side, the nation side suffered a terrible loss when their national football team’s plane crashed en route to a qualifying game killing all on board. The nation slowly recovered and their football team was revived and spearheaded by Kalusha Bwalya (Zambia’s Man of the Century) who the country rallied around. We look forward to hearing from Jimmy’s time in Zambia at this time and what it’s like to coach league football in Africa.
Mike Stevenson, Managing Director of Thinktastic, will then share his story.
Mike’s journey has been remarkable: a journey that has taken him from sleeping rough in London to becoming an award-winning entrepreneur.
Born in Edinburgh to a Scots/Irish father and Lebanese mother, Mike spent some of his early years in Pakistan and was in Egypt in the weeks leading up to the Suez crisis. After being kicked out of school at the age of 15, Mike spent a ‘badly wired’ and drug fuelled youth sleeping on the streets of London and busking in Dublin, before a near-death experience brought about a ‘turning point’.
His newly discovered work ethic saw him carrying bricks, fitting carpets, selling linoleum, furniture and suits, corking French wine, and working shifts in a steel works and biscuit factory. Mike has played guitar and performed on stage and in films – and all before he entered the world of marketing.
Nowadays, you will find him at his most persuasive and inspiring when talking about improving customer service, modernising public services, and backing our young people to be the best that they can be.
Included in the ticket price will be a three course meal, combining African and Scottish cuisine to accompany the night’s entertainment. The Speakers Night will help celebrate our work to date and hopefully inspire all in attendance to create positive change.
We hope you can join us for what will be an incredible night. Tickets are available from africaontheball.org/shop for just £30 and make ideal Christmas presents!
